Brunnenfest, Oberursel

hpuk performing in Oberursel

Hawley Place School Vocal Group 'hpuk' took part in the Brunnenfest

Pupils and staff from Hawley Place School travelled to Germany at the invitation of the Rushmoor and Oberursel Town Twinning Associations to perform in the 'Oberursel Brunnenfest 2010'. The pupils performed a variety of solos and duets as well as a programme of whole group numbers including pop, show and folk songs at the open air festival in Rushmoor's German twin town.

The combination of the excellent German hospitality, enthusiastic audiences, and mainly sunny weather helped to make the trip a great success. On Saturday morning we were given an interesting guided tour of the historic town and on Sunday morning several pupils took part in the schools' fun run.

Apart from our seven performances at the festival, we were also able to visit one of the secondary schools in the town to meet pupils, perform to them and experience one of their lessons. We even had some time for relaxation: shopping in Frankfurt and using the leisure facilities at the very comfortable Movenpick Hotel where we stayed. We are very grateful to Alison Boukhobza and Rainer Hoffmann from the two town twinning associations for their support and for all their hard work in organising such a wonderful and worthwhile trip.

The pupils (Hannah, Laura, Jo, Charlotte, Zoe, Maddie, Jessie, Rachael, Alex, Beth, Lilia & Arianna) who are all aged 13 to 15 commented: 'It was the best school trip ever & it has taught me how to become a better performer', 'I met lots of different people & learnt different ways of life. It was a great experience.', 'I loved seeing how the cultures are different & the trip brought us together as a team', 'My best things were performing on the different stages & speaking in German', 'The trip was amazing! We had so much fun & I became closer to people so they all became like my best friends'. The pupils were accompanied by four members of staff: Sharon Price (Head of Senior Music), Gerry Thomson (Head of German), Freyja Sculpher (Temporary Music Teacher & professional vocalist), and Liz Willey (German Teacher & Town Twinning Association member). All the pupils and staff feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to take part in such an exciting town twinning venture. Performing alongside musicians from Oberursel and their twin towns is an educational experience which they will never forget.
